WAG skills strategy should examine other barriers to employment, says REC Wales
REC Wales, has welcomed the Welsh Assembly Government’s new skills and employment strategy but has highlighted the need to recognise some of the other barriers to employment.
Commenting on the proposals, Philippa George, Chair of Directors for REC Wales, says: “Recruitment professionals in Wales face a daily challenge of matching job-seekers with the right jobs. The demand from employers often outstrips the availability of suitable candidates which is why it is crucial that we enhance the overall skills base in Wales.
“At the same time, it is important to recognise that we often face not just a skills gap but an ‘attitude gap’ in terms of job-seekers’ desire to genuinely integrate and progress within the labour market. Increased guidance and support for job-seekers will hopefully start to address this issue”.
The consultation outlines plans to enhance the voice of employers in the skills and qualifications system, through the creation of the Wales Employment and Skills Board and the work of the Sector Skills Councils.
Commenting on the potential contribution that employers and recruitment agencies can play, Philippa George concludes: “Recruitment professionals have a key role to play in highlighting the specific skills that employers are looking for and the job opportunities that exist in different sectors.
"Agencies can also make a vital contribution by encouraging the employers that they work with the consider applications from diverse groups, including those who have been out of the labour market for long periods”.
